Make a Poppy Dragon Mask

Colour, cut and wear your own Poppy mask for story time, dressing up or a rainy afternoon.

You will need

  • This template printed on card (or glue the printout onto a cereal box)
  • Crayons, felt tips or paint: Poppy is green with pink ears and wings and golden horns
  • Safety scissors, and a grown-up for the eye holes
  • Elastic, ribbon or string (about 40 cm), or a lolly stick and tape
  • Optional: glitter glue, sequins, wool for tufts

Steps

  1. Colour Poppy in. Green face, pink inside the ears, golden horns, pink tufts on top, rosy cheeks. Or make your own dragon colours!
  2. Add sparkle. Dots of glitter glue on the scales look like Poppy's glitter sneeze. Let it dry flat.
  3. Cut around the outside line. Take it slowly round the ears and horns.
  4. Grown-up: cut the eye holes along the pink dotted lines. Check the holes line up with your child's eyes and trim if needed.
  5. Grown-up: make the side holes with a pencil point into a ball of blu-tack, and thread the elastic through. Knot it so the mask fits snugly.
  6. Roar gently. Poppy is a kind dragon!
Safety: never leave young children alone with elastic around the head; a lolly stick taped to one side makes a hand-held mask instead. Take the mask off before running about.

Story time idea

Wear your masks and read Enchanted Adventures of Poppy in the Dream Machine. Whoever wears the mask flies the baby star home: hold it up high on the last page!
